Professor Valentin Yakushik is a political scientist and legal scholar with long-standing engagement in academic, civic, and international contexts. He holds doctoral degrees in Political Science (Doctor of Sciences / Habilitation) and Law (Ph.D.), awarded in Kyiv, Ukraine, during the late Soviet and early post-Soviet periods.
His professional experience includes teaching and research appointments at universities in Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, and Serbia. From 1993 to 2020, he taught Political Science at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.” He also held academic roles at the Faculty of Law, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (until 1996), and at the Department of International Relations and Social Sciences, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (2020–2022).
Currently, Prof. Yakushik serves as Executive-in-Residence Fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Switzerland, and as Professor at the European Center for Peace and Development (ECPD) of the University for Peace established by the UN in Belgrade, Serbia. He chairs the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, a Kyiv-based think tank.
His research focuses on transitional statehood, comparative legal systems, peacebuilding, and governance reform. Between 2013 and 2023, he offered commentary on political transitions, national reconciliation, and conflict resolution in broadcast media including Al Jazeera, Alghad TV, Sky News Arabia, Alhurra, Al Qahera News Channel, and several major broadcasters in India, China, and Vietnam.
Prof. Yakushik has contributed to advisory bodies of the Ukrainian Parliament and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and is serving on editorial boards of academic journals in Ukraine, Thailand, and Armenia. He publishes both individually and in collaboration, including works on political reform strategies, legal theory, and comparative political analysis.
